How do I review pull requests with ZeroTwo?

Open pull requests in Code Review in the desktop app, ask ZeroTwo for a private review or a fix, and review local changes with /code-review in a Code chat.

Updated: 18 hours ago

ZeroTwo reviews pull requests in the desktop app. The Code Review page lists your pull requests, shows each one's summary and changes, and lets you ask ZeroTwo to review it, fix a problem or answer a question in a chat beside it. A review starts when you select Review with ZeroTwo on this page.

Set up Code Review

Code Review is in the desktop app only. Select More in the rail and choose Code Review. The page reads GitHub through the GitHub CLI on your computer, so it needs the CLI to be installed and signed in:

  • If the page says "GitHub CLI not found", install the GitHub CLI and reopen the page. The page shows the command brew install gh.
  • If it says "GitHub CLI not signed in", run gh auth login in a terminal, then select Try again.

Find a pull request

The sidebar lists your pull requests in sections: Authored by me, Needs my review, Needs my team's review and Recently merged. Each section shows 10 rows until you select Show more. Pinned pull requests are listed first under Pinned. The Code Review options menu lets you switch the View between Compact and Detailed and choose which Sections to show. To open any other pull request, type in the box that reads "Search or paste a PR link". Until you pick one, the page says "Select a pull request".

Read a pull request

A pull request opens with a Summary tab and a Changes tab, which shows the added and removed line counts. The side panel lists Reviews, Comments, Checks and Merge status. In the header you can pin the pull request to the sidebar, copy its URL or open it in GitHub. You can also request a reviewer, resolve a comment, mark a draft ready and merge. Mark ready appears on a draft and Merge on an open pull request, and the arrow beside Merge lets you choose Merge commit, Squash and merge or Rebase and merge. Each of these changes the pull request on GitHub, so ZeroTwo asks you to confirm before it makes one.

Ask ZeroTwo to review it

  1. Open the pull request and select Review with ZeroTwo in the header. In a narrow window the button reads Review.
  2. ZeroTwo starts a chat titled "Review", then the repository name and the pull request number, for example "Review my-repo PR #12". A fresh reviewer reads the description and the full diff, then reports the bugs and regressions a maintainer would need to act on, with file and line references, and an assessment of the change's overall impact and risk.

The review is private to you. ZeroTwo is told not to modify any code and not to comment on, approve or post anything to GitHub for you.

To change how reviews go, select the gear beside Review with ZeroTwo. The box is headed "Tell ZeroTwo how to review your code". Write your instructions, or select Add example to start from a sample, then select Save, or Save and run to save them and start a review now. Your instructions are added to every review you start.

Ask ZeroTwo to fix a problem

Where the summary shows a problem, a Fix button appears next to it: Fix failing checks, Fix merge conflicts or Fix comments for unresolved review comments. Selecting one hands the problem to the chat for that pull request. ZeroTwo is asked to work on the pull request's branch, run the relevant tests and push the fix to that branch, so these actions do change the branch. For comments, it is told not to resolve threads or reply on GitHub unless you ask.

Ask a question

Type in the box at the bottom right of the pull request, which reads "Ask about this pull request". Once a chat is linked to the pull request it reads "Do anything" instead. Linked chats appear under Threads, and Enter split view puts the pull request beside its chat. These chats are Work or Code agent chats, so they use credits like any other Work or Code chat. Review changes on your computer

For work that is not on GitHub yet, type /code-review in a Code chat in the desktop app. Its description reads "Review unstaged changes or compare against a branch". If the repository has uncommitted changes, ZeroTwo reviews them, including staged, unstaged and untracked files. If the working tree is clean, it compares the current branch against the default branch. It opens the diff in a tab and asks ZeroTwo to review it, telling it to review only and not to edit files, commit or push. Settings > Git > Review delivery chooses whether the review runs in the current chat (Inline, the default) or in a separate task (Detached). If the chat has no local Git repository, ZeroTwo says "Open a local Git repository in the desktop app to review it", and if there is nothing to review it says "There are no uncommitted changes or branch changes to review."
