Does ZeroTwo read pictures inside documents and slide decks?

ZeroTwo reads document text and image files you attach. Pictures embedded in Word, PowerPoint or PDF files are not guaranteed, so here is what to do instead.

Updated: 20 hours ago

ZeroTwo reads the text in your documents and slide decks, and it reads image files you attach on their own. What it makes of a picture embedded inside a Word, PowerPoint or PDF file depends on the model and on how that file is read, so don't count on embedded pictures being described. If a chart or diagram matters, give ZeroTwo the picture as its own image.

What ZeroTwo reads from each kind of file

When ZeroTwo reads a file itself, this is what comes back:

FileWhat ZeroTwo gets
Text, code, CSV, JSONThe text, decoded
PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPointExtracted text
Image filesA description of the image, including any text in it
AudioA transcript
VideoAn analysis plus a transcript

For Word, PowerPoint and PDF files, the text is what you can rely on. ZeroTwo's text reading of these files does not add descriptions of photos, charts or diagrams placed inside them.

Some files go to the model as they are

Which route a file takes depends on its type and on the model you picked. Some models accept images, PDFs and plain text files directly, and ZeroTwo then hands those over as they are instead of reading them first.

  • PDFs. A model that accepts PDFs, such as the Claude models, receives the PDF itself, and what it makes of pictures inside the PDF is up to that model. For a model that does not accept PDFs, or a PDF that is too large for the model to take directly, ZeroTwo reads the file for the model and works from its extracted text.
  • Images. Models that can view images see the files directly. For other models, ZeroTwo reads the image and passes along its text and content.
  • Word, PowerPoint, Excel, audio and video files. ZeroTwo reads these itself, whichever model you pick, so you get extracted text, a transcript, or an analysis plus a transcript.

When a picture inside a document matters

  1. Attach the picture itself. Export the slide or chart as an image, or take a screenshot, and attach the PNG or JPEG next to the document. Image files are read in their own right. In the desktop app, Attach appshot in the + menu captures a window or screen as an image attachment.
  2. Point to it. Tell ZeroTwo which slide, page or figure you mean and what you want to know about it.
  3. Share the numbers. If you only need the values behind a chart, attach the spreadsheet or CSV it came from; those are read as text.

Each message can carry up to 10 files of up to 50 MB each. For the full list of limits and file types, see File uploads in ZeroTwo: common questions.
