Analyzing spreadsheets and data files with ZeroTwo

Attach a CSV, Excel or other data file and ask a question. ZeroTwo runs Python in a sandbox to compute results, build charts and return files.

Updated: 20 hours ago

You can attach a spreadsheet or data file to a chat and ask ZeroTwo to explore it. For this kind of work ZeroTwo writes Python code, runs it in a sandbox, and answers from the output, which you can inspect in the conversation.

Start an analysis

  1. Select the + button in the message box and choose Files and folders, then pick your file. You can also choose Add from library for a file you have already saved.
  2. Ask a specific question, such as "Which three products grew fastest quarter over quarter?" or "Chart monthly revenue and flag the outliers".
  3. Read the answer. In a regular chat, ZeroTwo shows the code it ran and the output as a step in the conversation. The step reads Analyzing while the code runs and Analyzed when it finishes. In Work, the same step reads Running Python, then Ran Python.

Your attached files are placed in the sandbox under their own file names before the code starts, so the analysis can open them directly. Files you attach from the message box are also saved as items in your Library.

Data files you can attach

ZeroTwo accepts the following data formats as attachments, among many others: CSV and TSV, Excel .xlsx, Excel .xls, OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods), JSON, Parquet, Feather, Arrow, Avro, Jupyter notebooks (.ipynb). One file can be up to 50 MB, and one message can carry up to 10 files.

What the sandbox can do

  • Data analysis, statistics and charts.
  • File conversion and validation.
  • Reports saved as PDF, Excel or Markdown files.

The sandbox comes with pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, seaborn, SciPy, scikit-learn, openpyxl, statsmodels, ReportLab and tabulate already installed, and ZeroTwo can install other Python packages when a task needs them. A single run can last up to five minutes.

When ZeroTwo does not yet know what is in a file, it is instructed to check the column names and data types first, then build the analysis on them.

Getting results out

In a regular chat, charts and files that the code saves are returned as links or images in the reply, so you can open or download them. In Work, finished files appear under Outputs in the side panel. For documents built from your analysis, see Making Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files with Work. To open a spreadsheet in the viewer, see How do I analyze spreadsheets and data files in ZeroTwo?

Tips for better answers

  • Say what each column means if it is not obvious, and name the time period you care about.
  • Ask ZeroTwo to explain how it computed a figure. The code is in the Python step, so you can check it.
  • Do not expect code for simple questions. ZeroTwo answers plain arithmetic and conversational questions directly rather than running code.
