How do I attach files and photos in the ZeroTwo desktop app on Mac?

Attach files from the + menu, by drag and drop, by paste or from Finder in the ZeroTwo desktop app, and what to do for pictures in your Photos library.

Updated: 20 hours ago

In the ZeroTwo desktop app, you attach files and pictures from the + button in the message box, by dragging them in, by pasting an image, or by opening a file with ZeroTwo from Finder. The message box has no camera option and no Photos picker of its own: pictures come in as files, through your Mac's file chooser.

Attach files from the + menu

  1. In the message box, click +. Its tooltip reads "Add files & more".
  2. Under Add, choose Files and folders, which the menu describes as "Upload from computer". Your Mac's file chooser opens.
  3. Select one or more files and confirm. They appear as attachments in the message box.
  4. Type your question and send.

The same Add section also lists Add from library ("Choose an existing file") for files already saved in your Library, Sketch ("Draw a sketch"), and Attach appshot, which captures a screen or window. See How do I attach a screenshot in the ZeroTwo desktop app?

Other ways to attach

  • Drag and drop. Drag files onto the chat. An "Add anything" overlay appears and says "Drop any file here to add it to the conversation."
  • Paste a picture. Copy an image, then paste it into the message box. ZeroTwo attaches it as a file named like pasted-image-1730000000000.png.
  • Open a file with ZeroTwo. Since version 1.1.22, a supported file that you open with ZeroTwo from Finder starts a new chat with that file attached. ZeroTwo registers as an alternate viewer for the file types it accepts, so pick it from Finder's Open With menu rather than expecting it to be the default app.

Pictures from your Photos library

ZeroTwo for Mac does not take pictures with a camera and has no Photos picker of its own; it uses your Mac's file chooser. If you cannot find a picture there, export it from Photos to a folder on your Mac first, then attach it by any method above. ZeroTwo accepts pictures in many formats, including PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG, AVIF and HEIC.

ZeroTwo tries to convert HEIC pictures when you attach them. If it cannot read one, it shows ".heic images are not supported" with the note "Please convert to .jpg or .png format.", so convert that picture first. While you drag a HEIC picture over the chat, the drop overlay also reads ".heic images are not supported". The iPhone and iPad app can take a new picture with its camera; see Attaching images to a ZeroTwo chat.

Limits

LimitValue
Files in one message10
Size of each file50 MB, videos included
Free plan1 file per message

When you go over a limit, ZeroTwo shows a notification. A file over the size limit gets a message that it "is too large" and exceeds the limit of 50 MB. On the Free plan, adding a second file gets a message that the Free plan allows 1 file per message. If you paste an image or text while 10 files are already attached, the message is "Maximum 10 files allowed".

Files you attach are saved in your Library; see How do I manage my files in the ZeroTwo Library? For the file types ZeroTwo can read and how it reads them, see File uploads in ZeroTwo: common questions.
